Current economic climate hindering workforce development

The Scottish Social Services Council Sector Skills Assessment for 2010/2011 has highlighted the need for changes to social care training in Scotland.

The report reveals the number of people receiving direct payments in Scotland was 17 times higher in 2010 than in 2001.  The report also revealed that less than half of all PAs delivering self-directed support received training.
The report noted that “Many employers in the sector are noting the impact of the current economic climate as a key barrier hindering workforce development….The cost of training may not be a key driver of skills demand but it plays a vital role in determining the capacity of services to upskill the workforce.”

Anna Fowlie, chief executive of the SSSC said “Less money means tough decisions but the overwhelming need to change and challenge, to do things differently, to encourage creativity and stimulate productivity means that having the right people with the right skills in place to do the job is a must. Workforce development and planning become even more crucial to the success of our communities and our economy.”
